October intention-setting: gratitude and giving thanks for the abundance around you

October Intention: Gratitude

Cultivate Gratitude: October Intention-Setting

October: a time when the world transforms and we prepare for the cold season ahead. As we reflect on the year's harvest and give thanks, we also understand the complexity of appreciating what we have while others are struggling.

While holding space for the challenges facing our neighbors near and far, it can be hard to find light. However, even in the face of adversity, we can cultivate a deep sense of appreciation for what we have to help us stay grounded and connected so we can be our best selves to serve those in need.

Gratitude isn’t about ignoring hardships or pretending everything is perfect; it’s about finding beauty in the small moments and acknowledging the blessings that often go unnoticed. In our hyper-connected, digital world, it's easy to see and want and consume more, and more, and more. We become so distant from the beauty and abundance right in front of us.

This month and throughout the season, let’s focus on ways we can embrace gratitude, even as we navigate difficult times, and use that gratitude to fuel self-care and connection with others.

MINDFUL SELF-CARE FOR GRATITUDE

Here are some mindful self-care practices you can weave into your daily life to help cultivate gratitude, even in challenging circumstances:

1. Write a gratitude list

Start your day by listing 1-3 things you're grateful for.

These don’t have to be big things—sometimes the smallest blessings are the most meaningful. Whether it's a pet, a cozy blanket, or a text from a friend, acknowledging these gifts brings perspective and anchors you in the present.

2. Savor simplicity

In times of uncertainty, simple rituals can provide comfort.

Create a routine that helps you feel connected to yourself and your space. Light a candle, brew a cup of tea, or sit in stillness and breathe deeply. Savoring these small moments can help you appreciate the peace they bring, even when the world feels chaotic.

3. Meditation for love and kindness

When struggles arise, it’s easy to get caught in negative thinking. A loving-kindness meditation shifts that energy by focusing on sending love and compassion—to yourself, then outward to others.

Sit quietly, close your eyes, and silently repeat:

“May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I live with ease.”

Then, extend those wishes to others, especially those affected by tragedy and facing hardship. Connect to a sense of shared humanity while fostering gratitude for your own well-being.

HONORING YOUR GRATITUDE BY GIVING

One of the most powerful ways to express gratitude is through giving.

When we recognize the abundance in our lives, we naturally want to share it with others. At the time of this writing, many are recovering from the impact of hurricanes. Whether it's donating to relief efforts, volunteering, or offering emotional support to someone going through a tough time, giving is a beautiful way to live in connection with others.

CULTIVATE GRATITUDE THIS OCTOBER

As we move through the month, we encourage you to appreciate the abundance in your own life and, if feasible, share your resources with those in need. By practicing mindful self-care and offering kindness to those in need, we can navigate these times with grace, resilience, and a heart full of appreciation.

Let us know how you're embracing gratitude this October, and don’t forget: even the smallest moments of appreciation can create the biggest shifts in your life.
